I made my first impulse stock purchase today. It was highly recommended by Cramer and since the stock symbol is DRS... i could not pass it up. Just check out how cool their website is http://www.drs.com/! I predict this will either boost my newfound interest in the stock market, or kill it (if things go bad).
I Can't Drive 55
As gas prices have been moving up and up, I've noticed quite a few links to "gas saving tips". They're just about everywhere and they always tell you the same 5-10 stupid ways to save gas. This weekend, as I was driving up to Maine to go snowboarding, I thought about one of those tips that shows up on every list. It goes like this: Drive the speed limit. The explanation is something like, every mph over 55 burns gas more inefficiently.
Now I'm no engineer, but if this tip is even true, then I think it must have something to do with the way a car is geared. I think it means that the car is setup to run most efficiently at certain speeds...including 55. So I have a good idea.... let's setup our cars to run efficiently at 65!! WHO DRIVES 55?? For half of my trip to Maine the speed limit was actually 65, and when it wasn't people drive that fast anyway. I guess there are a lot of ways for our country to save gas, but being honest about how fast we drive seems like an easy one to me.
Snowboarding conditions this weekend were terrible. I went on Friday and it was raining 75% of the time. I'd never really ridden in the rain and it wasn't as bad as I thought, but still not that pleasant. Friday night the temperature dropped about 40 degrees, so Saturday was freezing and icy!
While I'm talking about snowboarding I'd just like to congratulate Jacobellis on her silver medal and say I appreciated the extra trick at the end of the run. Even though it cost her the gold, i view it as a totally worthwhile risk. I hope it doesn't cost her endorsement money from people that don't understand the spirit of the thing. I bet she still ends up getting paid pretty well at the end of the day.
