Mmmmmm Pizza

I just got an add from Pizza Hut that says "Order your pizza for Halloween today. Halloween is the busiest day of the year at Pizza Hut." Do you think that's true? Wouldn't you think the Super Bowl would be busier than Halloween? What is it about Halloween that makes people want to buy pizza?

I was also tempted by the V.I.P (Very Into Pizza) deal. You pay $15 for a membership, then if you make two orders in a month you get a free large pizza. Hmm.. ok, but here's the deal breaker. You have to go pick up your free large pizza; no delivery! That saves me from sinking into Pizza Slut's evil grasp...but for how long?

Affliction and Beauty

Monday seems like a good day to start blogging with a quote. Last night I heard the following quote by Simone Weil in a sermon at Park Street. Weil was a moral and political philosopher, teacher, activist, and mystic that searched for truth and ways to overcome the injustices of the world.

Only two things pierce the human heart, beauty and affliction.
Simone Weil

Nothing too profound here, but it just seems a little strange that those words should fit so well together. Also, I think that if you are afflicted by beauty, it feels like you've been doubly pierced.

I was out Friday night when someone asked if I had heard that Elliot Smith had died. "No." I said, "Did he kill himself?" Sadly the answer was yes, but it didn't seem surprising. I didn't know too much about Smith, but the impression that I always got from his music or whatever I happened to read, is that he was an artist that knew affliction. In fact it was partly the way he conveyed this affliction, in his sweet sad lyrics, that made his music beautiful.

On Saturday I carved a pumpkin and helped break a Guinness record in Keene, NH. Keene bested it's own record for the most jack 'o lanterns ever assembled with over 28,000 this year. Seeing 28,000 jack 'o lanterns all lit up, is quite a strange, beautiful sight!
