A lot of the election aftermath that I've been reading on lefty blogs has been complaining about the religous right. Why are these people so stupid? How could they vote for Bush? How can you even try to reason with people who are obviously so unreasonable? My response to this attitude is.. Have you even tried?
Why is the Republican platform so apealing to the Christian right, while the Democrats platform is soo despised? Maybe it's just because I'm apathetic and don't pay that much attention, but I feel like the Democrats don't even try to show how their platform aligns with Christian values. Why don't they talk about how social wellfare, environmental stuardship, and giving up wealth are core Christian values? Why don't they at least make rational Christian arguments that support why a Christian might allow the state to sanction abortion or gay marriage? Yes there is a Christian right that will never listen to such arguments, but if they don't even try, how can they reach those that would listen?
I wish the Democrats would take these steps. I wish they would learn to speak to Christians without assuming they are uneducated. If they could just understand that faith is not irrational, but an extension of reason. I wish they would find the common ground between the hearland and (as one blogger proclaimed Kerry's base) the headland.
I'm not saying this because I wanted Kerry to win or Bush to lose, but because I think it would be good for both politics and the Christian Church as a whole. Anyway, I waited in line for an hour, only to find I was still registered to vote in the previous city I lived in. As a result, I didn't vote.
And who keeps voting for Copernicus?? Seriously?!?
